Approved Vendor – Mike Blaney the Marketing Guy

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Let me introduce you to Mike Blaney the Marketing Guy who is an Ubertor Approved Vendor. I asked Mike to email me some information about him, his services and what he does for Ubertor clients so that you can check out his services and see if there is a fit with you and your real estate business. Here is what Mike had to say:

mike blaney“I am a marketing guy providing a wide range of marketing services to small businesses with a specialization in Realtor marketing. My work is driven by my slogan the “Good Ideas are a Dime a Dozen, but Implementation is Priceless” and Ubertor is one of the key reasons I can deliver a quality website in the shortest time frame. I have created website for both Realtors and non-Realtors and find the built-in formatting tools combined with a little bit of html code here and there gives me all of the flexibility I need to create sites that look like they cost thousands of dollars. Then I give a quick lesson on using the Content Manager and my clients are self-sufficient in a day leaving me to work on their other marketing challenges.

One of the websites that I think works well for my clients is I create custom banners depicting scenes from the area they market in which reinforces their commitment to the area. The banners were simple to upload to the site using the new Library feature.

Another clean looking site is While this one uses a stock banner there is lots of content and I have purposely made the font a little larger to make it easier to read for clients experiencing a “reduction in their reading vision”.

And while I would have to admit I don’t know everything to comment on the customer support I think the Live Chat feature to solve problems is the biggest time saver. Whenever I have posted a question I get a quick response and can get back to work right away. The next frontier is using the CSS programming capability to create more customized sites.”

TechCrunch – “Slide Users Adding One Million New Widgets Daily”

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

TechCrunch is reporting that Slide users are adding 1 million new widgets daily to their system. So I decided to check it out and see what the buzz was all about. I created the below collage in less an 60 seconds by using a banner ad that was on my computer. Have you played with Slide? Could be a great way to add some neighbourhood pictures to your website. Nathan Justus in Seattle uses RockYou to do the same sort of thing, but I really liked how quick and easy Slide was to use.

super focused real estate web 2.0 community launches

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Think ActiveRain, Trulia Voices, Zillow Discussions but then take out the broad nature of those sites and you have is a “complete realty resource for buyers, sellers, investors and realty professionals” specifically targeting the lower mainland of British Columbia. I met with co-founder Jonathan Lyon yesterday and discussed his new business. They are quite new (June 07) and seem to have quite a few users. Take a moment to check out their site and let me know what you think – just add comments to this post. Maybe having a real estate community website super focused on a specific area is the future.

Are you “an ordinary real estate agent”?

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Remarkable marketing guru Seth Godin writes about Business card mistakes. One of the common mistakes he points out is how real estate agents business cards typically look alike. He says “don’t buy those color business cards with your face on them. You’re not an ordinary real estate agent, so there’s no sense in acting like one.”

What is the RE/MAX Platinum Club?

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

RE/MAX Platinum Club
Lots of agents have award logos on their websites showcasing what they have achieved. I think that is excellent, but it is no good if the general public does not know what the award is for.

Is it a participation award?
Is the Platinum better than the Diamond Club? 100% Club? Chairman’s Club? etc

All real estate companies have awards (not just RE/MAX) and the agents that earn these awards have worked hard to achieve them. The big problem is that there are too many awards and it seems that ALL agents have some sort of award.

Why not create a special page in your website for each of your awards?
- Add the award logo as well as a description of what the award is for, how many agents receive it per year, etc.

demo realtor websiteWhat have we done?
We’ve overhauled the control panel tabs, all the “Update Website” sections have been exposed to the main navigation of the control panel, some of the less used tabs have been replaced by text links along the top of the page.

Updated: Dashboard layout
We’ve streamlined the dashboard to be more useful. You now have access to support links, the new Jumpstart list and the Footer tools.

Updated: Content Library File Upload Purpose Selection
It is now possible to select the purpose of a file being uploaded to the Content Library from a convenient drop down at the top of the Content Library page.

New Feature: Dashboard Footer
Clients can now easily purchase and manage 5 features of their websites

* Google Maps
* XML Sitemaps
* Feedburner
* Webstats
* Website Favicon

New Feature: Favicon System
Clients are now able to change the favicon of their website (the small icon that shows up just to the left of the web address in most browsers)

New Feature: Resorting of Listing Pages
Clients are now able to re-sort all their listing pages by clicking the “Change Sort Order” button at the bottom of the Listings tab

New Clients: Default Listing photos are now watermarked with “DEMO”
In order to make it easier to realize that the one default listing that we create sites with is a demo listing, we’ve watermarked all the photos that come with that listing with the word DEMO across the image.

Bug Fix: Listing Navigation links overlap issue
The previous/next links on property pages would sometimes get very long for properties with long property types. This would cause visual overlap of those links. We fixed this issue by replacing the long property type on those listings with the word “Property” instead.
