Real Estate Meetup Summary - Joel Burslem, Social Media Manager for Inman News

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

joelbWe were fortunate enough to have Joel Burslem the Social Media Manager from Inman News come up from Portland on Monday to speak to our agents at the monthly Real Estate Technology Meetup. I was unable to attend this one as I am at at a Google Adwords conference in Chicago but I have had tons of excellent feedback, even from agents that did not attend stating they heard they should have. You can see his summary of the event here.

Jordan Behan said “he hit upon the changes in the markets in the States (their bubble has has done what bubbles always do) and how it is affecting the businesses and professionals in that industry. His words come as a bit of a warning to Canadian Realtors; there’s still time to establish a level of service and interaction that will keep people coming back lest our markets suffer the same fate as down South, and the web is a key piece in the puzzle.”

Benson Wong points out the 4 points that he liked from Joel’s presentation. From the Sutton Blog:

1. Learn the new tools. The “winds of change” are coming.
2. Build your online reputation. The game is the same, you build your business by touching bases. Online your website can work for you while you sleep.
3. Have conversations. Blogging and participating in online communities (LinkedIn, FaceBook, Yahoo! Answers, etc) demonstrate your expertise. Have conversations with people. Learn to type. ;)
4. Show, not tell. More photos, more video and more information. Use your digital camera, make a video, upload it to YouTube.

Our pals over at Vopenhouse.ca were happy to hear that Joel mentioned the use of Video and showed examples of agents using video to showcase their listings.

Once again, a big thank you to Joel for taking the time out of his busy schedule to make it to our meetup. The feedback has been outstanding and we hope to have you back again sometime soon.

As for those agents who missed it, or are interested in learning more about our monthly meetups you can see the details here. All of the meetups are free and they are designed to educate real estate agents from all over about real estate technology. Hope to see you at the next one.

Inman Real Estate Connect Recap

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

Inman News put on a great show in San Francisco last week. There were lots of great speakers and panels to watch and learn from. The most exciting thing for me was to finally put some faces to the names of people who I have been speaking with for a while. Also really great to have a chance to meet some Ubertor clients from across North America.

The Ubertor clients I found running around the conference were Mike Cannuscio from Marblehead, MA, Kris Berg from San Diego, CA, Jim Duncan from Charlottesville, VA and Ardell DellaLoggia from Seattle, WA.

Fellow bloggers that I bumped into were the dynamic duo Drew and DavidG from Zillow, Christian and Phil from Wellcomemat, The MyTechOpinion team, Joel Burselm, the Sellsius guys, Pat Kitano, Michael Simonsen from Altos Research, Dan from Bringtheblog, Seattle blogger Marlow Harris plus many more. (Sorry if forgot to put you on the list)

Feel like you missed out? Make it out to the next one in New York - http://www.realestateconnect.com

10 Things to pass on from Inman Connect in San Francisco

Monday, August 6th, 2007

inmansfconnect
I’m back from the Inman Connect conference in San Francisco with lots of good information. The next day or so I will post a few thoughts/pictures/feedback from the event.

Below are 10 things that caught my attention at the conference:

1. Video is even more important as the search engines get better at indexing it (these guys can help you)
2. Blogging is getting more exposure in the real estate world (finally) as hundreds of agents showed up for Bloggers Connect in San Francisco
3. Getting your listings out there is very important. Use Craigslist, Trulia, Zillow, Google Base, Kijiji etc to gain exposure to your listing and your website
4. If you’re not managing your online reputation (i.e., tracking your name on blogs, in blog comments and on various review sites) you need to start now. Try Google Alerts to watch your name on the internet
5. Great to finally see what other people look like that I have only emailed/phoned/chatted with
6. Real Estate is local. Razor sharp focus is the way to dominate
7. Agents need to learn about Facebook, Linkedin, MyBlogLog, etc to keep up to speed
8. Bloggers love Beer as the Beer for Bloggers event put on by Zillow was jam packed (looking forward to the next one)
9. The internet is the talk of the town. At no point did I notice anyone talking about print advertising
10. Inman puts together a great event, if you missed it, it is worth making the time for the next one
